International Day of Happiness 2026Every year on March 20, the world celebrates the International Day of Happiness 2026, a time to pause and reflect on what truly makes us happy. This year, the answer came to me when, out of the blue, a friend texted me an old photo of the two of us with the line: *Thought of you today.* It was a simple gesture that would have taken only a few seconds of her time, but it made my day.It reminded me how small, everyday acts of giving bring happiness not only to others, but to ourselves as well. And that’s what International Day of Happiness 2026 is all about.Key questions about happiness we answer below:What is International Day of Happiness? How do I find happiness? How do I build a happier life? Where do I start creating happiness? Where can I learn more? What is International Day of Happiness and why does it matter?March 20 is a special day for us at 365give for two reasons. It marks the first day of spring, a season we love and look forward to here, but it’s also International Day of Happiness 2026. This special day is celebrated worldwide as a day to recognise happiness and well-being as a global human need. This year, the theme is the connection between social media and goodness.According to the World Happiness Report, happiness rates are declining in most countries in the world. Even relatively wealthy countries like the USA, the UK, and Canada dropped in the UN’s 2025 rankings. What can we do to stop the decline? It turns out that happiness is a practice, not a birthright. It isn’t necessarily about big, grand gestures and celebrations. Think about how often happiness comes to us in unexpected moments: a kind act from a stranger, a child’s laughter, or being out in nature. Like kindness, it comes in small gives. We’re all about small gives at 365give!On the International Day of Happiness, people celebrate the day by volunteering, making time for others, reaching out to friends and family, or taking time out for themselves. This year we can use the day to do something nice for someone, or even for ourselves. Let’s use social media for good and share our uplifting stories, reflections, and photos at #InternationalDayofHappiness.Where can I find happiness? How can I build a happier life?We all do it. We think we’ll be happy when we get that new car, or the perfect relationship, or that big promotion. The truth is that while getting things and achieving goals is great, the happiness they bring is fleeting. In no time at all, we’ve moved on to the next thing we think is going to make us happy.Sound familiar? You’re not alone if you think that happiness is something you always seem to be chasing and never quite finding. The simple truth is that lasting happiness cannot be found in material goods or external accomplishments.Happiness is not something that happens to you.Let’s take a look at the science. Happiness researchers tell us that helping others, even in small ways, is strongly linked to improving well-being, and people around the world who help others report greater happiness. This is great news. It means that a happier life is something you can build, one small practice of giving at a time.Five simple practices to build a happier lifeThere’s an old saying that claims that the best things in life are free. Well, it’s true. And when it comes to choosing small actions to make you happier, you don’t have to spend a lot of money, and sometimes none at all. We’ve put together five practices you can start right away that are small, doable actions to build happiness for yourself and those around you. None require money, major life changes, or long-term commitments.Practice 1: Give a little something every daySmall gives really make a difference. This is what we are all about at 365give because we’ve seen how small, intentional gives add up to make a difference. The research backs this up: when you give you create a ripple of good that reaches further than you’d expect. We’re not talking about big gives (although those are great as well). Your give can be time, attention, a compliment, or a cup of coffee. Some of the best ideas for giving are very simple, such as sending a voice note to someone you haven’t spoken to in months. It feels good. It makes you happier. That’s the power of small, intentional gives.Practice 2: Be fully present where you areResearch into what makes people happy consistently finds that learning to be in the moment (or, “in the zone”) lifts our spirits and improves our well-being. Think about something you love to do: playing tennis, cooking a meal for a loved one, enjoying a delicious piece of fruit, or taking a walk in nature. Whatever it is, in these moments we are in the zone and our worries drop away.By paying attention to life’s moments, we enhance our well-being and spread happiness to those around us. It’s a small give that spreads.Try this: next time you eat lunch, put your phone away, and eat your meal without digital distractions. Look around you, take in what’s going on. Do you feel any different? It’s a small give to yourself and it counts.Practice 3: Notice what’s already goodResearch shows that being grateful for what we already have in our lives improves well-being, our relationships, and even our health. Many people enjoy the practice of writing gratitude journals. But that’s not for everyone! You can practise being thankful just by intentionally noticing what is already good in your life, and bringing some attention to it.It can just be as simple as taking a few moments at the end of the day to think about one good thing that happened to you during the day. Maybe you had the perfect cup of coffee, or met a friendly dog, or a meeting got cancelled. Small, wonderful things are worth acknowledging; your well-being will thank you for it.Practice 4: Connect with someoneLoneliness is one of the leading drivers of unhappiness in the world. So much so that the World Health Organization has identified it as a global growing health concern. This, despite the fact that we are more connected digitally than ever before. It’s worth asking ourselves: How often do we really make an effort to connect with someone? Making a genuine connection doesn’t have to involve a huge effort. It can be as simple as a two-minute conversation where you’re genuinely curious about the other person. Try this: next time someone asks “How are you?”, answer honestly, and then ask them the same. Be curious about their answer. Show you really want to know. Mean it. Ask follow-up questions. How did it feel to make a genuine connection?Practice 5: Celebrate small wins (yours or someone else’s)Celebrating big wins is fantastic, but what about the small ones? We routinely dismiss small wins as things not to be celebrated, as if they’re not a big deal. However, well-being research shows that acknowledging small steps and small wins builds positivity. We can make this a daily practice in our lives by taking the time and energy to acknowledge small wins and kindness. You can practise this by, for example, texting a colleague to say you appreciated what they said in a meeting, or telling someone you really appreciate that they thought to invite you to an event. It all adds up to making things better for each other. One give a day. That’s where a happier life starts. The International Day of Happiness 2026 reminds us that happiness is a journey. It starts with small gives, and easy daily practices that build over time to enhance our well-being and that of the people around us.Committing to one give every day is our mantra at 365give.
