We’re curious folks at 365give, so we wanted to explore AI’s impact and the future of AI. Is it a good thing, or should we be concerned? And just as importantly, how do we ensure it’s used for good?

What Is AI and Why Does It Matter?

AI refers to a range of technologies that process information at speed and use data to solve problems. The technology is designed to mimic how people think, but at unprecedented speed. Moreover, AI analyzes patterns, summarizes information, and makes predictions faster than humans can do alone.

While AI innovations have exploded in recent years as computers have become more powerful, the technology has been in use for quite some time. Many people may not realize how embedded it already is in daily life. For example, mapping and navigation tools such as Google Maps and Apple Maps rely heavily on AI. Translation apps, voice assistants, and streaming recommendations are also everyday applications of AI.

AI is a powerful tool built by humans and trained on data. With strong frameworks and guidelines, we can ensure it’s used for good.

Positive Impact of AI on Society

AI excels in analyzing large quantities of data, summarizing information, and predicting patterns and outcomes. This power is now being used in nearly every area of our lives to help us better understand our world and make it better.

Challenges and Responsible Use of AI

AI is a powerful ally in our shared quest to grow human knowledge and potential. However, the technology also comes with drawbacks. As the impact of AI on society grows, it’s important these challenges are addressed.

1. AI Bias

AI gets its data from multiple sources including websites, books, datasets, images, videos, search queries, and more. It’s always learning, constantly updating its data in response to feedback and new information. However, what happens when its source data is biased? Simply put, AI produces biased results. One clear example appeared in early versions of facial recognition software, which trained mostly on images of white men. This built-in racial bias caused the technology to misidentify women and people of colour.

Therefore, we need better data management and clear guidelines to ensure AI systems learn with inclusivity and fairness from the start.

2. Privacy and Trust

Data  and a lot of it  forms AI’s foundation. Whenever we interact with a website, an app, or a wearable device, we may be giving that tool our personal information to use and store. Since data is such a valuable resource, the real question becomes: what happens to it once we hand it over?

Many people have raised concerns about how AI collects and stores personal information. It’s a valid question, and one we don’t yet have all the answers to. Therefore, stronger regulation must protect people’s privacy and rights while also building trust in AI.

3. Work and Jobs

With major technological changes comes new challenges. One area of concern for many is how AI will change the workforce. Will it take people’s jobs? We’re already seeing this happen in some fields. Consider what’s been happening in some call centres where customer service representatives have been replaced by AI-powered chatbots. And you may have noticed the AI effect in your local supermarket where self-checkouts, backed by AI, are replacing human cashiers.

However, AI isn’t just about taking jobs. It’s also creating new opportunities for skilled workers such as data analysts, AI trainers, and technicians. The challenge is to ensure that retraining opportunities are made available. Governments and companies need to invest in training programs to lay the foundation for new career pathways.

4. Environmental Impact

Training large AI models requires vast amounts of computing power, all of which demand resources. The data centres that support AI systems often use electricity from fossil fuels, resulting in a large carbon footprint. Alongside this, huge amounts of water are needed to cool the systems, sometimes competing with the needs of local communities. For example, in Oregon’s Dalles region, local residents and farmers have raised concerns about how stretched water resources have got worse due to the water demands of large data centres.

AI systems need to be managed more responsibly, especially when it comes to energy, so we can build a more sustainable future.
