How Embracing Sustainability Brings Happiness to Your Life

Embracing sustainability can bring us happiness naturally, just as Earth, our planet, does. Earth has a way of repurposing organic matter every year. It comes naturally to us as a society to learn from the earth, adopting these same processes, which not only will reduce clutter in our lives, communities, and waste in landfills, but recycles them through a common sensibility, like the way a compost for gardens can thrive, we can too by contributing to it for soil packed with nutrients and continual growth we can rely on for years to come.

Much of what we learn is modelled from our Earth’s seasons, elements, environment as a whole, and communal knowledge gathered from generation to generation.

Sustainability and Happiness Go Hand in Hand

Earth’s seasons show us how having a routine, or regimen, of change can build a healthy and strong structure in our day-to-day lives, and for future generations to enjoy our world and lives to the fullest as well. When we build upon sustainable practices in our lives, not only is it natural to our being and roots, but it also brings about happiness. Happiness is generated this way when we give back to the Earth through these thoughtful practices; it creates mindful value in our life by living well for the earth, and in turn affects us and others positively in the long run.

As history to the present day has shaped our world as a constant, so has sustainable reasoning to take alternate care in how to package our food, for example. We have experienced how plastic has caused disruption in ecosystems; our sensibility and solution is adapting to reuse, thereby reducing waste and its repercussions.

Simple Ideas for Embracing Sustainability:

Reusable Bags

Bringing a reusable bag to the grocery store when we are out and about has become second nature and accepted as a considerate standard to reduce plastic waste, with reusable bags even being sold now in stores.

Storage Jars

Some practices are not as new, including using glass bottles for storage. You can clean and sanitize them without them breaking down or risking chemicals being leached into your food.

Plastic Alternatives

Woven baskets are another plastic alternative for carrying food items. Look for baskets from sustainable sources.

Healthy on the Inside

Using biodegradable products is another healthy alternative that helps our Earth stay healthy and chemical-free. They also help us stay healthy from the inside out, and they can be easily broken down in our environment.

Lifestyle Choices

These are simple but effective ways to keep happiness and health connected through lifestyle choices.  Carrying, storing, and cleaning food in healthy ways keeps it fresh and healthy for our consumption. When we are healthy on the inside, we tend to be happy on the outside because we are taking care of ourselves and the Earth around us.

Animals, and people all rely on Earth to be the best it can be. So, let’s take care of our only planet and be its friend for life!

A Happy Balance with Earth in Our Minds and Hearts

Every day is a new opportunity to learn from our Earth and those around us. So much can grow and branch out from a sustainable practice where we lead by example. When we model this way of being, it allows others to connect with us and ask questions. Change is a part of life, and so is being adaptive to change. However, most acts of preservation are cherished and set the tone as a steady, reliable guide in our life to follow, like a teacher we look up to. We can be teachers, too, by stewarding our Earth and acting upon how to practice gratitude through knowledge-keeping of preservational practices, developing our understanding of the importance of sustainability and its reach that has been since time immemorial. You can learn more about Indigenous knowledge here and how it has encouraged shifting our practices today in an ever-changing world through open communication, education, and reconciliation.

These acts are known to help us appreciate our surroundings, inward and outward – what we eat, how we grow it, those who grow it, what we drink, where it is sourced, questioning if the source is renewable, how we can protect the resource, the air we breathe, is it clean, how can we keep it clean.

Questioning our roots does not come without responsibility and knowing we are all connected, having a conscience of our actions and why it matters for us and others to live well and prosper through breaking down the gradual building blocks of the simplest things we rely on most. The necessities of life, and having respect for them, are those building blocks of what creates gratitude, and also creates happiness.

With Earth Day approaching on April 22nd, these are some ideas to follow and embody this way of being from the inside out for our well-being, creating everlasting change to keep a healthy body, mind, and spirit through embracing sustainability. When we take care through our actions, the Earth and the communities it breathes life into thank us and smile.
