Family Wellness: Self-Care Tips to Strengthen Bonds and Boost Well-Being

There are many ways for us to practice self-care, which in turn strengthens our bonds and helps in our overall well-being. Self-care is necessary in order to be mentally, emotionally, and physically well in today’s fast-paced world. This helps to reduce stress, increase resilience, and improve the overall quality of life. Here are some ways that you can effectively incorporate routines to help in your own self-care.

Family Self-Care

As a family, you can practice self-care together and boost your well-being individually while working towards a common goal of improving everyone’s health. Making goals as a family will also help strengthen bonds as you work towards those goals and share your progress and ultimately your success!

Here are some simple ways to incorporate self-care into your family life and strengthen bonds along the way.

1. Make Sleep a Priority

You should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. It’s important to have a bedtime routine that is relaxing, free of screens and comfortable.

2. Stay Active

Find activities that you enjoy. It can be going for walks, going to the gym, dancing, yoga or participating in a sport. Physical activity boosts energy and mood.

3. Set Boundaries

You are ok to say no to commitments that you do not feel add energy and that cause stress in your personal life. Healthy boundaries protects your time and mental well-being.

4. Connect with Others

Ensure that you are maintaining relationships with friends and family that are supportive and not draining or toxic. Schedule social gatherings with the people in your life that “fill your cup” and continue to strengthen bonds with family and friends.

5. Practice Gratitude

Focus on the positive aspects of your life. This creates an attitude of gratitude. Write in a gratitude journal or take a few minutes to be grateful for the good things in your life.

6. Unplug and Disconnect

Sometimes taking breaks from screens and digital devices can help. Book time away from technology and engage in activities that don’t require screens or social media. You could play a board game or go for a walk.

7. Get Organized

Sometimes, when we are feeling unorganized, we can spiral out of control by feeling so overwhelmed. Getting organized allows you to figure out what you need to do to take better care of yourself. It could be something as simple as keeping an area of your home for keys, purses, coats, which ensures they are ready to go for the next day.

8. Read a Book on Selfcare

Reading is such an amazing way to disconnect from reality for a bit. Oftentimes we turn to our phones to scroll through social media which adds more stress and worries than it helps. Reading helps you to slow down. It can help improve your mood and it can help you stay more present and mindful.

9. Create a Real Life “Happy Place”

Having a place where you feel joy and have positive vibes can boost your mental health, create a comforting feeling and help your well-being with little to no effort.

10. Donate Your Time

Giving back reduces loneliness and increases your happiness and feel-good vibes. It raises one’s self-esteem and gives us purpose in life. You can choose ways to volunteer that will continue to strengthen bonds as a family.

Adding some self-care strategies to your daily routine and forming new habits can help profoundly with your overall well-being. Self-care is not selfish, it’s necessary in order to maintain balance and resilience in your life in the face of challenges we come across. By investing in self-care, you help yourself to lead a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

I am a mom of 2 amazing teenage boys, I work in the healthcare field in Human Resources. I love spending time with my partner, Tim and our kids. I enjoy reading, going for walks, spending time at the beach and hanging out by the fire pit delighting in bonfires in the summer months and going for long country drives, stopping to grab an ice creram somewhere along the way. My passion in life is to help others and be the change we want to see in the world and hence why I am a part of the 365give.ca team and movement.
