Day 23:For Women Only! Changing the World 1 Biodegradable Tampon at a Time.
This is truly a “Stumble Upon” giving moment. I know the world is changing for the better when the brand “Tampax” is going biodegradable. Today I was able to buy – on sale – a biodegradable tampon made by Procter & Gamble.
Give 23 / Day 23
Yesterday, GIVE 22 used my purchasing power to create a positive impact on the world and today I had to do something similar. I had to buy tampons and I chose to buy biodegradable tampons.
I have always find this purchase difficult for 2 reasons.
1) The guilt I feel every time I throw a the plastic applicator into the garbage adding to the plastic deposited into the planet.
2) If I do choose to buy an organic / biodegradable tampon from a natural health food store like Whole Foods I cringe paying triple the cost as a regular tampon.
I know biodegradable and organic tampons are more readily available in other countries like the United States. We seem to be behind on many organic products in Canada unfortunately. Today I was pleasantly surprised to finally find a company like Procter & Gamble making a large impact through an item as simple as a tampon. Flushable and biodegradable applicators. They may not be organic but we are on the right track. Not only did I buy one box but several as they were on sale selling for even less than a regular plastic applicator tampon. YEH!
Time Commitment: 0
Cost: I saved money! $2.00 a box!
Great post! I’ve been using a paperless alternative to tampons for several years and it has saved me a small fortune plus alleviated the guilt of waste – a menstrual cup. You can find it at most environmental stores, here’s a website for a popular brand: http://www.divacup.com/
