Day 161: Dignity Is Beautiful

In honour of International Women’s Day I asked Beauty Night, a local Vancouver not-for-profit organization, to do a guest post on something that is very important to them for 2011. They have recently started a campaign that we can all participate in – “I change, I Change the World.”

Beauty Night’s mission seems simple:

“Beauty Night Society provides marginalized people and youth the tools to make positive lifestyle changes.”

They help women who have not had the love, encouragement and positive reinforcement that we all need to thrive. Imagine if all you have ever known is abuse in your life rather than a hug or a gentle touch. The Beauty Night Society help’s women gain the confidence, make friends and know they have the support in their life to excel. Take a look at some of photos’s of the women’s lives they are changing.

Their campaign is doing what I am doing, if I change, if I give everyday, if I do something, I change the world. If one person creates change in their life it causes the ripple effect that changes everything. It changes the world.

What can you change in your life that will ripple through your friends, your family and the world?

Day 161: Give 161 A Guest Post by Caroline MacGillivray Executive Director / Beauty Nights

I change, I change the world.

Do you have a change you want to make in your life? If you commit to making that change over the next 6-8 weeks, you can change yourself and the community. Please chose to celebrate International Women’s Day but making a positive change in your life and raising money to change the lives of women and children living in poverty through Beauty Night’s programs.

I Change, I Change The World (IC) is Beauty Night Society’s (BN) first fundraising initiative of 2011.  The IC campaign provides a platform for volunteers, participants, employees and other supporters of BN to create positive change in their lives while raising money for BN.

The campaign start date is March 8, 2011 and end date is April 19, 2011.  Participants in the IC campaign will have 6 weeks in which to affect a change of their choice (like quitting smoking or running 2km without stopping).

Our campaign goal is to raise $100 000.

The monies raised will support Beauty Night’s 3 streams of programs: wellness, life skill development and makeovers. Through this initiative we aim to raise money to continue building self esteem and changing lives of women and youth living in poverty. “In the past 10 years, we have given over 11, 000 life-makeovers,” Beauty Night Founder and Executive Director, Caroline MacGillivray explains, “By asking our supporters to make a positive change in their lives and raising money for a cause they believe in, we hope to make a positive impact in the lives of those who support and live in the community. I change, I change the world is a great way to do that.”

When asked if she was going to be participating in IC campaign, MacGillivray smiled and said,”Yes. I decided it was time to get over my fear of running. I stepped out of my heels and into a pair of running shoes. I started my IC goal several weeks ago as I am training for the Vancouver Sun Run. Thanks to my trainer, Laura Fairfield, I managed to run 5k without stopping. So I am half way there.”

Some of our Beauty Night Supporter’s goals include:

1) Learning 200 words in sign language
2) Running the Sun Run
