Day 123: Take Part: Little Kids Rock

Today is my day to Take Part. I have book marked this site and added a note in my automatic calendar so I will remember to vote every Saturday for a different charity that is in the running to get a piece of a $1,000,000 donation from American Express. Last week I voted for Big Brothers and Big Sisters and this week I have voted for an organization I knew nothing about Little Kids Rock.

Day 123: Give 123

Saturday is the one day of the I have a morning to myself. It’s the day my son and his Dad hang out together. It gives me a chance to catch up on a few things and maybe even a little down time. Hmmm, I forget what that is most days “down time”. The first thing on my list is always my GIVE of the day. Take Part has made it easy for me to GIVE and I learn as I go. There are so many fantastic not-for-profit organizations in this world it is next to impossible to read about them all but with Take Part I get to learn something new every week.

This week I decided to vote for Little Kids Rock for a very good reason, my son, Nicolas. I started my son in a music program (we do it together) at about 15 months old. We have had the same teacher for 2 years now and she always stresses the importance of how children learn through music starting as young as 6 months old. I have seen firsthand the impact music has had on my son even at the ripe old age of 3. Last night he actually set up an entire drum set using his own will and imagination. He went down to our basement and got a bucket, then to his playroom for a basket that holds his cars and last but not least some storage boxes that hold his Lego. He got two spoons out of the kitchen drawer, set up a chair in front of his drum set and one for me, his audience, and off he went drumming away to some music we had playing. It was pretty amazing to watch the entire process.

Little Kids that Rock believe every child deserves a musical education. But not every family has the luxury to afford music classes for their 3 year old nor do all schools have the funds to provide classes for every student. Here is a quote from their website about what they do for children.

“Playing music is more than just ‘fun’ for kids. It is transformational and vital. Yet budget cuts have forced many school music programs to close. These cuts have had a disproportionate impact on schools serving low-income communities. We partner with school districts and teachers across the country to restore and revitalize their music programs by providing their kids with free music classes and free musical instruments. At Little Kids Rock, we believe that every kid has the right to rock!”
