Day 324: Schools Back! How to Teach Your Kids to Give

Sep 1st

Schools Back for KidsToday is an exciting day for our family. It’s my son’s first day of school.

I have spent the last 4 years of my life with my son almost every day. I still remember the first day I held him in my arms when he was just 11 weeks old (my son was adopted) and now he walks, talks, rides a bike, gets himself dressed and is ready for school. I am so proud of who he is today as he starts the next phase of his life. His life will never be the same and neither will mine.

Nicolas is just heading into preschool this year so no “back to school” shopping is needed but I found a great way to support kids that do need school supplies that may not have the funds to get them every thing they need.

Day 324: Give 324

I’m not sure I want to know how much it will cost me one day to stock up on all the school supplies my kids will need to start school. Binders, note books, paper, laptops, pens, markers, rulers – the list in never ending. We know that many families in this day and age don’t have the money for all the extra’s needed and I wanted to do my part to make sure a child had a few of the basics that are required to start their school year off on the right foot.

Schools need supplies for the kids“All Staples locations in Canada have partnered with local schools and charities for our 6th annual School Supply Drive, to be held from July 23 to September 6, 2011 (July 31-September 4, in Quebec). Last year, with your help, we raised $1.03-million dollars to support local students. This year, we will meet or surpass that goal, with your kind support.”

Staples is giving us the opportunity to give this week with a “Back to School” community program that will give teachers and kids basic supplies that are need for the school year. Teachers were surveyed to list their top 14 supplies needed by children returning to school:

Pencils / Scissors / Calculators / Binders / Erasers / Glue Sticks / Highlighters / Lined Paper / Folders / Backpacks / Markers / Mathkits / Pencil Crayons / Notebooks

I did some quick math and if you shopped very wisely you may be able to get all these items for under $100. What if you have 3 kids and have a hard enough time putting food on the table let alone school supplies in their back packs?

For a small donation at the cash register I was able to purchase a Back to School starter kit for one child. A give I felt great about that cost me little time and little money but will make a big impact.

Time Commitment: 0 (made it while making a purchase)

Cost: $5.00

Day 323: Shop Your Way to Being Philanthropic

Deep River Snacks give with every bagI love food.

But I love wholesome food that makes my body feel good from the inside out. What if the food we purchased gave back to our bodies and gave back to the world?

Day 323: Give 323

Some people like to shop for shoes and other for cars. I like to shop for food. I love beautiful grocery stores that make shopping an experience rather than a chore. I spend much time in grocery stores shopping for my family.  I am drawn to stores where you can find a unique selection of products that I know give back to my body, my families body and to the planet.

My most recent discover was Deep River Snacks. I didn’t pick them up because the bag had big lettering on it saying “GOOD FOR YOU!” The flavour drew me in “Twist of Lime”. Next I picked up the bag and read it. Between the ingredients and the companies philosophy of giving back I was sold.

“We’re lucky, we get to come in to work each day and make snacks we love… So we understand that we have a responsibility to our planet and to people that aren’t as lucky as we are. That’s why we choose to give back.” A quote taken directly from the Deep River Snacks charity page.

Here is the great part. Each bag has a different dedicated charity. For example my “Twist of Lime” tortilla chips supports Caroline’s Miracle Foundation.

But each bag is different. It’s a fun match – do you find your favourite flavour or do you find your favourite charity on the bag and support it by eating this healthy snack.

Now you ask me how is a bag of chips good for you?

  • All Natural
  • No Artificial Preservatives
  • No Artificial Flavours or Colours
  • No Cholesterol
  • No Trans Fat
  • No MSG
Don’t get me wrong – It’s not like it’s replacing the “apple a day that keeps the doctor away” but as treats go this is a good choice.
Shop for good. Give to your body and give back to the world.
Do you have a favourite product that keeps giving? Share it with us through Twitter, Facebook or leave a comment.
Time Commitment: 0
Cost: Money I would spend shopping just made a good choice

10 days ago 365give was hacked. We are back up and running but the hackers destroyed all the information that was saved before by the server host. It will take some time to restore all the days of giving on 365give. The last day of giving was Day 322 (not reflecting on the most recent post) which will be restored in the coming days. I will start at day 323 where I left off and look forward to all the featured gives slowing coming back. Thank you for your patience and support. Let the giving every day continue!

Sincerely.

365give launched on a simple premise: One person wanted to create positive change in a world; one person wanted to leave a legacy of giving; one person wanted to create a movement that would mobilize people to give back every day of their lives. 365give is an online diary of one woman’s actions and impact in changing the world every day for 365days. 365give has the potential to create a movement of giving and a community of committed ”givers” that can educate and inspire future generations.
